Chengdu Market Street Completion Ceremony
BC Minister Pat Bell attended the completion ceremony at the Chengdu Market Street project on November 11, 2011. This brightly coloured hybrid wood frame building, which is a common mixed-use building design, will accommodate classrooms on the top two floors and have retail space on the first floor. The event was attended by students, teachers, the school principal and also local officials.

Chengdu Market Street Wood Frame Construction Completed
The Chengdu Market Street project in Qinbaijiang County is a hybrid, mixed-use, non-residential building. The building is attached to the Chengdu Qingbaijiang Primary School, which will use the top floors as classrooms. Minister Pat Bell attended the completion ceremony in November 2011, which also marked the completion of the Canada-BC Wenchuan Earthquake Reconstruction Initiative.

The Canada-B.C. initiative worked closely with the local government to construct a comprehensive care facility for local senior residents. The construction of the care centre broke ground in spring 2010 and the wood frame construction was completed in summer 2011. The newly unveiled Beichuan Qiang Maple Leaf Seniors Home is 5,600 square metres and can accommodate over 200 residents.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
In June 2008, the governments of British Columbia and Canada announced the CDN$8 million Canada – B.C. Wenchuan Earthquake Reconstruction Project to help rebuild communities in China damaged by the May 12 earthquake. Canada and B.C. signed an MOU with the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs for the general implementation of this initiative.
Four projects were approved for the reconstruction initiative. The Xiang'e Primary School was completed in July 2009 and opened September 2009 for the new school year. The wood frame construction of the Mianyang Special School for the Disabled was completed in November 2010. The wood frame construction of the Chengdu Market Street (hybrid school building) was completed in July 2011 and unveiled in November 2011. The Beichuan Elderly Care Centre was completed and unveiled as the Beichuan Qiang Maple Leaf Seniors Home in November 2011. The projects are earthquake-resistant buildings based on Canadian engineering and B.C. wood products that are considered world-leading in seismic performance and energy efficiency.
Mianyang Special Education School for the Disabled - Completed
More than 13,000 children and adults in Mianyang were left disabled by the earthquake. As part of the Canada-BC Wenchuan Earthquake Reconstruction Initiative, a comprehensive wood frame rehabilitation facility and school was constructed in Mianyang. [more]

Beichuan Qiang Maple Leaf Seniors Home - Completed
The earthquake left 200 elderly residents in Beichuan Leigu County without proper care facilities. The Canada-BC initiative worked closely with the local government to construct a comprehensive care facility.[more]

Xiang'e Primary School in Dujiangyan - Completed
Xiang'e Primary School was destroyed by the May 12, 2008 earthquake, and claimed the lives of many students and their rescuers. Located in a rural area of Dujiangyan City, the school captured the attention of the entire country and was personally selected by Mayor Han to be part of Shanghai’s first round of reconstruction initiatives.[more]
